Formerly a working sugar plantation, the property has a long history of owners including Lord Glenconner, famously known for his friendship with Princess Margaret, and as the proprietor of the Bang Restaurant.

The resort is currently owned by Roger Myers and completed a three-year multi-million dollar transition that saw the property re-branded and re-launched as Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort on November 30, 2012, under the continued management of the Viceroy Hotel Group.
